For the past few years around the time I got pregnant with my youngest I had started hearing a lot about chemicals. How they are destroying our bodies with food that we eat and products we use. I also learned about the negative impact that we have with the environment with choices that we make like driving a vehicle or tossing everything in the trash and not bothering with recycling. Ever since then and even more so these past few months I have gotten rid of what we had been using on our bodies and only purchase organic and non-GMO foods for myself and my family.
Sometimes it may seem overwhelming to make changes and sometimes it is but taking little steps to better yourself and the planet really can make a big difference. There are tons of ways to do this and below you will find a list of 5 things to get your started.
- Eat Healthier and Organic Foods
I couldn’t believe what I was eating and feeding my family in the past. I just had no idea, I mean food is good for you right? Well not all food is created equal and now that I have learned that, I opt for more fresh fruits and vegetables and choose as much organic products I can while shopping. I also refrain from purchasing highly processed foods. If I can’t pronounce or have no idea what the ingredient is, I don’t buy it! There are a lot of great organic companies and Stonyfield is one of my top favorites! They make all sorts of different kinds of yogurt and also offer milk, cream and frozen yogurt.
If your city/town offers recycling that is awesome! Where I live it is actually required or you can get fined. The previous town I lived in was pretty awesome, you didn’t even need to separate your recycled trash they did it for you. For my family we have 3 different baskets we use and they are separated for paper/cardboard, plastic, and glass/metal. Each week we go to the transfer station and put the items in each bin they have labeled there. It is pretty easy to recycle. You can recycle papers, cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, plastic, glass and metal. Check with your local transfer station or city to see how their recycling program works.
3. Swapping Personal Care products with more Natural & Eco-friendly ones
Another great way to take better care of yourself and the planet at the same time is purchase personal care products that are made from natural or organic ingredients and also fully recyclable when your done with the package/container. This is one of the biggest reasons why I love using products from Tom’s of Maine. They care about you and the planet! They even have products for kiddos as well like their new Wicked Cool Deodorant for both boys and girls. Products like their deodorant and antiperspirants use 100% naturally derived ingredients. Their packaging is also fully recyclable through TerraCycle.
I used to think mediation was silly. When I was younger my dad would meditate a lot and showed my brother and I different breathing exercises and let us listen to his really cool meditation tapes. In the past few months I have made it a point to take some time at the end of the day and listen to one of my meditation CD’s to unwind and de-stress from the day and I find myself calmer and feeling better and looking forward to that little bit of time each evening. There are many different kinds of CD’s or MP3 you can get.
5. Walk instead of Drive
I know, I know… This is easier said than done! Not everyone can walk to work but I’m talking about if you want to go to the local store, maybe walk there instead. If you work with others you know, use one car instead of 4 or 5. If you work or are going to an appointment that is not on the first floor take the stairs instead of using the elevator.
Again little steps for change really do matter!! Since doing all of these things I feel better physically and feel better knowing that I’m doing my part to be nice to the planet.
Do you do any of these already? Which ones? Tell me in the comments below. 😉
