Building a Chicken Coop

chickens, chicken coop, coop, hen, eggs, diy Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

chickens, chicken, hens, eggs, coop, chicken coop, I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

chicken, chickens, chicken coop, coop, hen, rooster, eggs, nesting It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

This is an awesome chicken coop. The chicks look like they have a better home than me. lol Glad that you got some of your money back for things that were broke. It looks amazing and I do know more people are having chickens for organic eggs. Thanks for sharing.

Hehehe I think change Chen coops are the cutest things ever lol… I almost want to buy some chickens so I can have a cute little coop in my back yard lol

  • Sharon

How much fun is that? My husband and sons love making stuff for outside stuff, they built a birdbath so why not a chicken coop?

  • Paula Schuck

This is great. I wish I lived somewhere I could raise chickens and other animals. Ahh, maybe one day!

  • Ricci

This chicken coop is cute and didn’t look too hard to build. I have been looking into getting chickens for a while and this would be perfect for me!

  • Kelly Hutchinson

Wow! This is such a cool post! I have no use for a chicken house for myself, but you never know when you will need one, right?

  • Miranda (myrabev)

Looks very cute, we used to keep chickens when I was a kid they were more pets than food.

  • Lynndee

Your chicken coop is so cute. My mom has chickens but her chicken coop is bigger than that. It is not as cute though. 😉

  • Michelle @ Dishes and Dust Bunnies

That’s a great little chicken coop! If I didn;t live in a condo I would love to do something like this. I grew up on a farm so I miss those days!

  • Tami

My hubby has been talking about raising chickens. I’ll have to show him this and see if he wants to build our coops.

  • Christi

How cool! I have a good friend who has chickens and they have a coop similar to this that they love. I think it would be awesome to have fresh eggs right in your back yard!

  • Jessica Simms

The day I finally am able to have my farm I will be building this, its so easy and cute!

  • Carly Brydon

This chicken coop looks really nice! I wish we lived somewhere where we could have our own chickens!

  • Nikki

Looks like the final product came out good! I would have cried if I saw all those pieces and crappy instructions. I am not good at assembling things, lol!

  • Nicole

Wow you are a modern day warrior woman, harvesting the eggs AND building a chicken coop to go along with! I can hardly put together a desk from Ikea!

  • Jeanine

That is a really nice coop! I haven’t seen one that nice before most that I’ve seen are old and rum down! This looks great!

  • Mistee Dawn

Thanks for the how-to. We had chickens when I was little and I have always wanted to get some, but have just never done it yet.

  • Donna Ward

Congratulations! That does look complicated and you did it in 4 hours – very cool – Awww…I had little chickies when I was little – and it would be fun adopt some baby chicks to get fresh organic eggs and be around them – my friend just did this a few months ago – looking forward to your stories

This looks like it turned out amazing. I have a friend that just built a chicken coop and it looks nothing like this.

  • Winter White

Now that is one swanky chicken coop! Your chickens are like 5 star chickens lol!

  • Chubskulit Rose

That’s me and my husband, we would rather buy those pieces that are ready to put together than build it from scratch. It looks nice and you guys did a great job!

  • Christy Maurer

It would be so fun to live where we could have chickens! Thanks for sharing your chicken coop! It is very nice!

  • Christi from sexymoxiemama.com

You have just brought back that desire to live on a farm. I love livestock and wonder how it would be to own chicks. Well done with the craftsmanship seeing as how not all of the pieces came in tact. Looking forward to hearing the stories you hinted about.

  • Melissa Pezza

I’ve always wanted chickens, but we’re not zoned for it. If we’re ever able to have them, I’ll be having my husband build a five star coop like this one.

  • Tracy @ Ascending Butterfly

It’s funny I know a few people doing it now, I look forward to reading more about your progress with it. Stopping by from the Awesome Bloggers group! 🙂

  • Stacie @ Divine Lifestyle

That’s the nicest coop I’ve ever seen! That’s like a chicken mansion.

  • Robin (Masshole Mommy)
