Did you have someone famous that you looked up to or was your hero when you were younger? I have been pondering the answer to this question for a few days now since my kiddos have been reading these new books from National Geographic.
National Geographic Kids Books is the leading nonfiction publisher for kids and the only publisher with the world’s premier scientific, education, and research organization at its core. They have come out with these 2 wonderful books- The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines that would make great gifts for kiddos ages 8-12.
The Book of Heroines highlights heroes such as Harriet Tubman, Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, Emma Watson, Mother Theresa and many more. This book is great at discovering true stories of world leaders, war heroes, superstars, peacemakers and other gusty gals who changed the world.
The book of Heroes highlights heroes like Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates, Sitting Bull, Galileo, Stephen Hawking and many more. In this book you will learn true stories of superheroes, rebels, world leaders, action heroes, and many other daring dudes!
My daughter was super excited when she saw her new books. I couldn’t wait to sit with her and check these books out myself to see if I knew anyone featured in them. To my surprise I had heard a lot of them but learned of a lot of new faces as well. Being a hero can have many meanings to everyone so now when I think back about the question, who were my heroes when I was younger, to be honest I don’t think I really did look up to anyone but I always and will always agree that anyone that has fought in a war is one of my biggest heroes.
When I ask my daughter who she looks up to, her first answer was me (mommy), aww and from the books her top favorite was Annie Oakley. I had heard of her before but not her story. Apparently she was an awesome sharpshooter! When she was very young her father died leaving her mom 6 young children to take care of, Annie helped her mother by shooting game and selling it and it didn’t stop there! She was so good that she was able to pay off her mother’s mortgage on the house!
