October is National Healthy Lung Month, and Heather Von St. James and the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance are spreading awareness of deadly toxins and disease that affect our lung and overall health. Heather is a 9 year survivor of pleural mesothelioma, a rare cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos and affects the lining of the lungs. As part of her treatment, Heather had her left lung removed, and now works to spread awareness of the deadly toxins that can affect our lung health.
Some simple things you can do to protect your lungs are:
- Don’t smoke, or create a plan to quit smoking.
- Exercise regularly and eat a healthy balanced diet.
- Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals, radon and toxins such as asbestos.
- Have regular checkups with your doctor and make sure to mention any noticeable changes in your health.
