 Children’s sunglasses are a necessity-Not and accessory.

Did you know that it’s JUST as important for a child to wear sunglasses as it is to wear sunscreen? I’m guilty, I am one of those parents that lather my kiddos up with sunscreen during the summer months but never really thought they should also be wearing sunglasses as well.

Sure kiddos look cool and cute with them on but by not wearing them outside at all times the UV rays could cause harm to their eyes. It’s not just Summer protection we need to worry about but Winter as well.

Some eye disorders that can be caused by Sun Damage are:

  • Cataracts
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Pterygia
  • Skin cancer around the eyes
  • Photokeratitis

That’s some scary stuff. You can purchase sunglasses pretty much anywhere but they are not created equal. Prevent Blindness America suggests you make sure that sunglasses block both types of ultraviolet rays, UV-A and UV-B 100%. (I didn’t even realize there were 2 types) Find sunglasses that fit your kiddo well, and look for ones with polycarbonate lenses and frames.

REAL-KIDS-SHADES-2Real Kids Shades and Prevent Blindness America are working close together to increase awareness and understanding of the long-term dangers of unprotected sun exposure to children’s eyes.

Real Kids Shades are the leading innovator of children’s 100% UVA/UVB eye protection. They offer high quality sunglasses in five different sizes for kiddos. The stages focus on style, performance and fit. They have products for Baby (0+), Toddler (2+), Kid (4+), Youth (7+) and Tween (10+) with options of Flex Fit and their new P2 Lens Technology.

Just recently we had the opportunity of reviewing Real Kids Shades with our kiddos. They were pretty excited when they all saw they had their own pair of awesome sunglasses. We reviewed the Toddler Explorer, Youth Breeze, Tween Blade and Swag. They fit them very well and they enjoy wearing them. I really like the feature of the wrap around with the Toddler Explorer glasses because it helps keep the sunglasses on my son without falling off his cute little face. =)

My kids give Real Kids Shades 2 thumbs up and I have to agree, I really like that I know where to go to find great shades my kids can wear that WILL actually protect their eyes.

Now see that’s what I’m talking about. You going to make kids sunglasses let’s call them kid sunglasses not hand-me-downs that mommy or daddy no longer wants! Now these are cool.

Sunglasses are a very important part of eye health. I get headaches very easily from the sun. If i am not wearing my sun glass i am guaranteed a migraine. We always made sure the kids had sun glasses to wear .

I’d love to win this for my daughter. I guess a few years back I read the most important thing to consider in buying sunglasses (especially for kids) are those that have UV protection. You stated it is 100% UVA/UVB whatever those stand for so I guess this one will be perfect for her! I want to protect her eyes as much as I want to protect mine! 😀

  • Debi

I think that all of my kids would love these cool shades.

  • michele d

My children have several pairs and they are great and flexible for them too!

Kids would even have more sensitive eyes so they should wear shades. They also need protection while they are outdoors.

  • Tamika

It’s about time that someone thinks about toddler’s. I have a hard time finding sunglasses for my niece and granddaughter at this age. I’m going to be picking up a pair right now and have for next summer.

  • shari

Love these shades for kids. So stylish and protects them against sunlight too.

  • Dee

I love the idea of good children sunglasses! My niece who is two and I feel it is very important to protect her eyes with good quality glasses.

  • Kay @ The GO Mamas

I agree with you that parents may not realize the effect of unprotected sun exposure on their children’s eyes. Seeing them squint all the time should be a clue! I like the style of glass this company offers, any kid would be happy to wear them

  • Roch

I didn’t realize that there are eyeglasses that don’t protect the sun against the dangers of exposure. I thought once the eyes are blocked with the glasses, we’re already safe haha. This post is very informative and helpful.

  • Robin (Masshole Mommy)

I have the hardest time getting my boys to wear sunglasses. Maybe I should get them each a pair of these cool looking shades!

  • tiffany f

I did not know that so many eye issues can arise from not using proper eye protection on our little ones. I am not a big sun glass wearer myself but will definitely be purchasing some for myself and my toddler this spring. Thanks for filling me in!!
