Uh Oh, It’s Almost Time To Go Back To School

“Contributed Post”

Guys, I’m sorry to tell you this, but it is almost that time of year again when the kids head back to school. That might be hard for some parents to hear, particularly if you haven’t been on holiday yet. There will be lots of families who have been saving that trip to Disney until the end of summer. Or, you might be planning to go on that camping trip in August. But it doesn’t change the fact that school is still just around the corner and you have to be prepared. There might be a few things that you need to do to get ready for the school rush. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place because I’m going to go through all the ways you need to get your kids ready for the new semester. Along the way, we’ll look at possibilities of how to make things a little cheaper and easier for you while avoiding some of the forgotten issues.

Getting Everything They Need

If you’re lucky, the school will have provided you with a list of books and items that your child will need for the new school year. Luckier still and that list might be quite short with the school doing most of the heavy lifting. But usually, there’s still quite a lot to buy so let’s opt for the basics first. You’re going to need pens, paper, possibly a calculator and any other item that might be useful for one of their classes. Usually, books are supplied by the school but if not you can grab them second hand on Amazon. If you’re already worried about the expense, don’t be. There are plenty of deals on right now in places like Walmart. In fact, there’s even a brand new superhero themed ad that they have just released to encourage you to buy.

If you’re shopping online for the items for the school year, you might want to think about using a cashback portal like Ebates. The benefit here is that you buy the product and then you get money back for using one of the affiliate links of the site. So, you can actually get a lot of money off which is quite useful if you have a particularly long list of items.

One of the most important items to buy would be a school backpack. Remember, these are part of the school fashion, so it’s important to find one that is in style for your child. You also need to make sure it’s large enough for all their school items and belongings. Again, these are usually on sale at this time of the year so there will be various options you can consider. The rookie mistake is letting girls to school with a handbag rather than one that can actually store their books.

Of course school items are just the tip of the iceberg because you will probably also need to buy their school wardrobe. Or, you’re going to have to give older kids some cash so they can buy it themselves. It is worth looking at the school dress code, particularly, if your kid is moving from middle school to high school. You need to make sure that they aren’t wearing any items that could be deemed to breach the school dress code. You’d be surprised how many items that might include these days. Anything that could be deemed even a tad expensive is probably banned. As such, it’s best to avoid tees with cartoons on them altogether.

The good news is that Sears and other shops often have sales on back to school clothing around this time. So, if you have a moment between going on holiday and cleaning the home, make sure you stop by.

Watering The Summer Drought

Have your kids been studying over the summer break? Don’t worry if the answer is no because you are certainly not alone in this predicament. Despite almost certainly having summer reading and assignments to complete for various classes it’s quite common for kids to forget all about it through the summer season. But you still have a couple of weeks left to make sure that they get back on track and into the swing of things. You should sit down with them and ask them whether they have any assignments that they need to complete. Usually, all they need is a little nudge in the right direction. You might even be able to help them researching a summer assignment or getting the basic structure in place. And if you can’t at least you can boost their interest and make sure that they do catch up on the books they were supposed to read.

If you want to take things one step further, you can think about hiring a tutor. With a tutor, you should easily be able to get your kids on the right path and prepared for their first classes. You will typically find that older kids are offering tutoring to earn some extra money through the summer months. You should definitely take advantage of this possibility because they typically offer low rates and while there’s no guarantee it’s going to help, it certainly won’t hurt.

Ready For Lunch?

If your kids eat packed lunches at school, you need to make sure that you have the right foods in to give them everything they need to get through the day. You should start by making sure you have some fruit like bananas or oranges. Packed full of vitamins, it’s a great start to guarantee that your kids are getting their five a day. You want to avoid the sugary snacks and chocolates even as treats where possible. The problem with sugar is that while it does provide energy, it also provides the low that comes afterward. So, if your kid has a sugary snack at lunch after about an hour it’s worn off, and they are tired again before school ends. You can imagine how this could be a problem, particularly if they aren’t focused in the last classes of the day.

It’s also worth thinking about aiming for organic meals as well. Research shows that organic foods can be far better for kids, even in small amounts.

Although, before we even get to getting those lunches packed you should consider what you’re feeding your kids for breakfast. You probably know that breakfast is the most important meal of the the day. If you make sure your kids are eating a good full breakfast, you can guarantee that they are already prepared for their first day back at school.

Encouraging Extra Curricular Activities

It’s never too early for parents to be thinking about the college years. You need to make sure that you are doing everything you can to give your children the best shot at the greatest future they could have. Preparation for this starts in high school, ensuring that your child stands out to college recruiters. One of the ways you can do this is by encouraging your kid to participate in extracurricular activities. This could be anything from the chess club to one of the sports teams.

If your child is athletically inclined joining a sports team could be the perfect option because it will lead to the chance of a sports scholarship at University. This can dramatically reduce the cost of college and take the financial pressure off your shoulders.

Remember, a new school year is a chance for new opportunities. So, if your child was never interested in extracurricular activities before, this could be the right time to turn things around. Of course, the only way you’re going to find out whether this could be the right move is by talking to your child and finding out what they could be interested in. Sometimes all it takes is a little encouragement.

Obviously, it depends on the level of school that your child is entering into. As you get to the end of high school college becomes more important, but in middle school, you don’t have to worry about this as much. At this point, it’s better for kids to just enjoy school and find their footing.

Getting Back Into The Swing Of Things

Through the summer months, the school or weekly routine tends to go out the window. So, you can probably forget about the curfew or bedtime because while through the school year it makes sense, through the summer it’s a little pointless. Kids will be having slumber parties, attending festivals, heading to the beach and spending time with friends. The important thing is to make sure that you do quickly get them back into the school routine. A few late starts in the first week isn’t that much of a problem because the school will hardly notice but if it continues they definitely will. Once it becomes a permanent issue, it can be more difficult to deal with the problem and get back to normal. So, you need to be strict but fair here, making sure that kids are getting the level of sleep that they need.
